US 30 From the Illinois Line to the Ideal Section
Heavy Duty Towing in Dyer begins at the Illinois state line, which forms the town's entire western border. Dyer is a Lake County town of 16,517 people (2020 census), about 30 miles from downtown Chicago, and US 30 is its primary east-west road. Trucks arrive from Lynwood and Sauk Village in Illinois on one side and from Schererville and Merrillville on the other. Call (219) 529-2610 for a heavy wrecker.
US 30 and the Lincoln Highway
US 30 follows the old Lincoln Highway through Dyer. The US 30 route description says it enters Indiana from Lynwood, Illinois, at the state line and that Dyer's stretch is a four-lane divided highway, with a section near Moeller Street that has a center turn lane before it goes back to divided ahead of US 41. A section shared with Schererville called the Ideal Section, about 1.3 miles long, opened in 1923 and was rebuilt in the 1990s. A disabled truck on a divided highway can be pulled from the shoulder. On a center-turn-lane section it blocks more. Tell us which stretch you are on.
The state-line problem
Because Dyer borders Illinois, we get calls from drivers who are not sure which state they are in. It matters for police and for insurance. Tell the dispatcher the nearest street or business and which direction you were traveling when you stopped. If you crossed the line from Illinois, tell us that too. Your insurer or fleet may have a state-specific claims process.
A ridge south of the road
Dyer is mostly flat, but there is a steep sand ridge south of US 30 called the Glenwood Shoreline. Heavy trucks leaving US 30 for local streets may find grades and soft edges. Elevation in town is 663 feet. Loaded vehicles with brake trouble should stop rather than coast, and we can set up a tow that handles a locked drive axle or a leaking air system.
Amtrak and South Shore stations
Dyer has an Amtrak station served by the Cardinal, and the Munster/Dyer South Shore station, opened March 31, 2026, is mainly in Munster, with overflow parking in Dyer. Rail and bus traffic mix at those points. Coaches and shuttle buses need a gentle recovery if passengers are aboard. Tell the dispatcher the number of passengers.
