The refinery next door
The Whiting Refinery, owned by BP and operated by BP Products North America, was established in 1889 by Standard Oil of Indiana. Wikipedia describes it as the eighth largest refinery in the US and the largest in the Midwest, spread across 1,400 acres across Whiting and parts of neighboring Hammond and East Chicago.
