The I-94 Bypass, Two Exits and Lake-Effect Snow

Semis, motor coaches and RVs pass through, and the lake makes the weather a daily factor. Call (219) 529-2610.

I-94 swings around the city

I-94 curves northeast and bypasses Michigan City to the southeast. Exit 34 is US 421 to Westville and Michigan City, signed 34A south and 34B north. Exit 40 is US 20 and US 35 toward South Bend, Michigan City and La Porte, and it is the northern terminus of US 35. The segment between US 20 and the Michigan state line has the lowest traffic count on I-94 in Indiana, at 37,179 vehicles (annual average daily traffic). If you are stopped there, give us the mile marker. Exit 40 sits at mile 39.934 and I-94 reaches the Michigan line at about mile 45.77.

US 421 and US 20

US 421 runs from Madison in southeastern Indiana to its northern terminus at US 20 on the south side of Michigan City. Its original northern end was a few miles farther north at US 12 near Lake Michigan. Drivers on US 421 are often headed to or from the interstate. Tell us if you are southbound or northbound, and the nearest cross street.

Lake-effect snow

Lake Michigan produces frequent lake-effect snows and rain showers here, and winters are cold and snowy. Snow bands are narrow, and a road can be clear in one mile and white in the next. Winter calls include slide-offs, jackknifes and trucks stuck on ramps. Tell us if visibility is poor and whether you are in a lane. A second wrecker for traction is common in these conditions.

The power plant on the shore

The Michigan City Power Plant stands on the Lake Michigan shore west of downtown. It is owned by NiSource and operated by NIPSCO, has a 680 MW nameplate capacity and uses a hyperboloid cooling tower. NIPSCO announced in 2018 that it would let the station wind down, with a final shutdown pending in approximately 2028. Demolition would open roughly one mile of lakefront. Industrial and demolition work generates heavy equipment moves, and we handle oversize and equipment hauls when a unit is down.

Casino, outlets and tourism

Blue Chip Casino is the largest riverboat casino in Indiana, with a 22-story hotel added in 2009 that is the biggest building in northwest Indiana. Lighthouse Place Premium Outlets opened in 1987 on the north end. The eastern edge of Indiana Dunes National Park, including Mount Baldy, lies in the city. Charter buses and RVs headed for these places break down like anything else. Tell us the passenger count.

What to have ready

  • Interstate, direction and mile marker, or the street and cross street.
  • Unit type and weight, loaded or empty, cargo if hazmat.
  • Weather and visibility.
  • Passengers aboard, if it is a bus or motorhome.
  • The payer: driver, fleet, insurer or broker.
