What happens at exit 21

Indiana Toll Road exit 21 is the interchange for I-80, I-94, US 6 and SR 51. It is where I-80 joins the toll road and follows it east to Ohio, while I-94 stays south. That interchange opened in 1964. East of Central Avenue the Borman Expressway narrows to six lanes. From Gary's Toll Road exit 17, it is about 3.8 miles east to exit 21.

A driver on the wrong ramp here ends up on a different highway. If you are stalled, tell us the road you were on, the ramp and the nearest sign.

Borman exits in town

  • Exit 13 is Central Avenue. It is an eastbound exit and westbound entrance only, reached through the I-65 ramps.
  • Exit 15 is US 6 east and SR 51, toward US 20 (Ripley Street).
  • Exit 16 is the Toll Road and the end of the Borman.

The railroad that named the town

Lake Station was a stop on the Michigan Central Railroad, and the name is recorded as far back as 1851, when it became a depot. It was the western end of the line and the first train station in Lake County. George Earle platted the town in April 1852. The name was changed to East Gary in 1908 and back to Lake Station in 1977. Today, CSX's Porter Subdivision is the city's busiest rail line. A rail trail named the Fairview Walkway follows the old Joliet Line.

Local work sites

Major employers include Sun Engineering and Pro-Chem-Co. The city annexed unincorporated parts of Hobart Township in 1972.

What dispatch will ask

  • Toll Road, I-94, I-80 or a city street
  • Eastbound or westbound
  • The last exit you passed
  • Unit type and cargo
  • Who is paying

Why the interchange is tricky for a wrecker

A tow here often starts with a simple question: which highway will the unit end up on? A disabled tractor on the I-94 side of exit 21 is on a different road than one on the I-80/I-90 toll road side, with different police, different tolls and different exits. We ask for the last exit you passed, the ramp you are on and whether the unit is blocking a lane. If the unit is on the toll road, dispatch will explain what to expect.

Rail and trail

The Fairview Walkway follows the old Joliet Line, and CSX trains run the Porter Subdivision through town. If you are stopped near any crossing, get clear first, then call.
