Hammond is a railroad town first

The Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad is headquartered in Hammond. It began operating in 1896 and runs a 320-mile Class III switching system around Chicago. Gibson Yard in Hammond is described as arguably the largest automobile switching operation in the country. Where rail moves cars, trucks move the rest: Hammond is also home to a Unilever soap factory, Cargill food processing, large ExxonMobil and Marathon Petroleum storage, and a FedEx distribution center.

The state line and the Toll Road

Hammond is the only city in Indiana that borders Chicago. The Toll Road enters Indiana here, and Hammond's section has its own details:

  • Exit 0 is US 12, US 20, US 41 and Indianapolis Boulevard. It is a westbound exit and an eastbound entrance only.
  • The Westpoint Toll Barrier sits at milepost 1.06.
  • Exit 3 is SR 912 (Cline Avenue). It is an eastbound exit and a westbound entrance only.
  • Exit 5 is US 41 (Calumet Avenue).

Those one-way ramps matter when you are stranded. Tell us exactly which side of the interchange you are on and which way you were headed.

The Borman through Hammond

The Borman Expressway enters Indiana in Munster and runs through Hammond at 10 lanes. Its busiest stretch, between Kennedy Avenue and SR 912, carried 163,912 vehicles a day in a 2010 study, one of the most heavily traveled stretches in the state. Exits 1, 2 and 3 are Calumet Avenue (US 41), Indianapolis Boulevard (US 41/SR 152) and Kennedy Avenue. A stalled tractor in a lane there stacks up traffic fast, so the first call should go to police if you are in a live lane, and the second to us.

Surface streets and the Gary line

Hammond's southern border runs from the Illinois line east to Cline Avenue, and the city sits next to Gary. In 1981 a barrier was built on 165th Street, one of the roads between the two cities. Truck drivers should stay on the posted routes and not trust a GPS shortcut.

Information that speeds up a Hammond dispatch

  • Which side of the state line you are on
  • Exit number and ramp direction
  • Tractor, trailer type and axle count
  • Cargo, and whether it is refrigerated, liquid or hazmat
  • Whether a fleet, an insurer or a broker is paying

Staying clear of a live lane

On the Borman or the Toll Road, your safety comes before the tow. If you are in a live lane, call 911. Stay out of the lane, wear your vest and leave the trailer for us. When we arrive, we work with police on closures and set up the recovery from the side that protects the crew.

Yes, when we can get a wrecker to the unit. Give us the nearest street, the gate and the contact who can let us in.

My trailer is loaded with food. Does that change the tow?

It can. Tell dispatch the cargo, whether it is temperature controlled and who owns it, so the recovery plan protects the load as well as the unit.
