Why so many trucks end up here

U.S. Steel founded Gary in 1906 as a company town for its mills, and the city was incorporated on July 14, 1906. Gary Works was under construction from 1906 to 1908, and the first iron ore was unloaded there on June 23, 1908. It is an integrated mill with a stated capacity of 8.2 million tons a year, on the Lake Michigan shore at the north end of Broadway. The workforce has shrunk from over 30,000 in the early 1970s to about 2,250 in 2023, but the highways built around that industry are still here, and so are the trucks.

Where the interstates cross

I-90 (the Indiana Toll Road), I-80/94 (the Borman Expressway) and I-65 all run through Gary, along with US 6, US 12, US 20 and State Road 912 (Cline Avenue). I-65 meets I-80/94 at exit 259, signed 259A and 259B. Its northern end is an at-grade intersection with US 12/US 20 (Dunes Highway), just north of the toll road. On the toll road, exit 10 serves Gary Road, US 12, Cline Avenue and the airport. Exit 14A is Grant Street, exit 14B is SR 53 (Broadway), and exit 17 is the I-65 and US 12/20 interchange. On the Borman, exits 5, 6, 9 and 10 are Cline Avenue, Burr Street, Grant Street and Broadway, and exits 11 and 12 lead to I-65.

Tell us which road you are on first. A breakdown on the Borman near the I-65 interchange is a different job from one on the toll road, because the lanes, ramps and who controls the scene are different.

The airport and its freight

Gary/Chicago International Airport sits about 3 miles northwest of the city center. Its main runway was extended from 7,003 to 8,859 feet and opened on June 25, 2015, and UPS Airlines started express parcel flights from the field on November 2, 2020. The interstate exit lists point to Cline Avenue (SR 912) for airport access, so a stalled truck there is often on the same road as mill traffic.

Lake-effect winter

Gary averages about 40 inches of precipitation and about 25 inches of snow a year, and lake-effect snow sometimes builds into large blizzards. For a loaded tractor-trailer, that means jackknives on ramps, drive axles spinning on overpasses and trucks sliding off at the interchange loops.
